A climatology of Wisconsin tornadoes from 1948 to 1996 is presented. Graphs show the temporal distribution of tornadoes by year, month, and time of day. Maps of tornado tracks detail the spatial coverage of tornadoes by decade, month, and Fujita scale. Spatial patterns of all historical tornadoes resulting in loss of life are also compared for records in the periods from 1864 to 1949 and from 1950 to 1996. These comparisons show results consistent with general atmospheric patterns over the Midwest and historical trends in population density and severe weather warning capability.
