4.14 Stratospheric aerosol transport out of the tropics observed by the High Resolution Doppler Imager

David A. Ortland, NorthWest Research Associates, Bellevue, WA

Aerosol extinction coefficients at 630 nm are determined from measurements taken by High Resolution Doppler Imager (HRDI) on UARS as part of the wind retrieval algorithm. Global maps of these extinction coefficents from 20 to 35 km are produced on a daily basis, and reveal many events where Rossby waves have propagated into the tropics and drawn aerosol rich air into the subtropics and midlatitudes. The climatology of such events from throughout the UARS mission will be discussed and related to the dynamics revealed by the HRDI wind measurements.
