Aviation meteorology: a new degree for industry
PAPER WITHDRAWN
Michael R. Witiw, Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Florida
The past few years have seen an increase in interest by the aviation industry in individuals who not only understand world aviation systems, but also are competent aviation meteorologists. To meet this growing industrial need, two years ago, Florida Institute of Technology inaugurated a Bachelor's degree in Aviation Meteorology. This degree provides competence in both the areas of aviation and meteorology. The two curricula include both flight and non-flight options. In addition to their meteorology courses, students will complete such courses as high altitude physiology, aviation safety, air traffic control, and aviation law. Both programs are very rigorous, and include the traditional physics courses and math through differential equations and statistical analysis. All courses required by the Federal government's Office of Personnel Management for employment as a meteorologist are included in both programs as are courses recommended by the Council on Aviation Accreditation.
