Arctic oscillation and variations in wintertime jetstreams

Julian X. L. Wang, NOAA/OAR/ARL, Silver Spring, MD

Northern hemisphere winter time jet streams, i.e., subtropical jet in troposphere and polar night jet in stratosphere, are analyzed. Two distinct modes of variations of the jets are interannual and decadal. Two jets are closely coupled on those two scales. Their relationships to SST and geopotential height resemble distributions of ENSO, Pacific decadal oscillation, and Arctic oscillation with prospects of alternative physical understanding.
