Wei Yan, University of Science and Technology, Nanjing, Jiansu, China; and N. Ma and Q. Wang

Radar and satellite data are important information sources for weather forecast. With the development of communication system, data share has been a common need for forecasters. High efficient data compression techniques become important for optimizing data communication or data storage therefore. In this paper new neural networks and wavelet analysis based non-distortion and distortion data compression techniques are presented for radar and satellite data respectively. And some preprocessing methods for contiguous scanned radar PPI data is presented to improve the non-distortion compression ratio. Experimental results show that the compression ratios are improved significantly both for non-distortion and distortion data compression.
