Climate Variability, the Oceans, and Societal Impacts

1.3

Trend-, ENSO-, and AO- related precipitation and surface temperature variability

Todd P. Mitchell, Univ. of Washington, Seattle, WA; and R. Quadrelli and J. M. Wallace

The mesoscale structure in the temperature and precipitation trends of the past 30-years and in two prominent patterns of climate variability: ENSO-like variability in the Pacific sector and the Arctic Oscillation (AO), are documented in monthly mean data for the cold season (November-April) based on simple linear regression. One-degree latitude-longitude resolution data sets of sea surface temperatures from the Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (COADS), and land surface air temperature and precipitation from the University of Delaware are analyzed.
