P2.14

The relationship between the atmospheric transients and the tropical sea surface temperatures

Peitao Peng, NOAA/NWS/NCEP/CPC, Camp Springs, MD; and A. Kumar

The inter-annual variability of the atmospheric transient activity with time scales from synoptic to sub-seasonal during the northern hemispheric winters in reanalysis data is studied. A particular interest is in the relationship between the stormtrack movement and the tropical sea surface temperatures. Through this study, we hope to provide a clear picture of how the tropical forcing modify the path and the occurrence frequency of the midlatitude storms. The predictability of the statistics of the weather extremes will be examined.
