CODE Design and Services for the WSR-88D ORPG: The Future of Radar Algorithm Development

Andrew D. Stern, Mitretek Systems, Inc., McLean, VA; and T. J. Ganger, R. E. Saffle, and M. J. Istok

The National Weather Service (NWS) Office of Systems Development is continuing to sponsor the development of the Common Operations and Development Environment (CODE) for the Weather Surveillance Radar - 1988 Doppler (WSR-88D). The objective of CODE is to shorten the application, development, testing and integration cycle of new hydrometeorological algorithms into the WSR-88D.

In this paper, the engineering design of the new applications programming interface will be discussed leading from the proposed new common data structure to showing the acquisition of data and the forwarding of a completed image for distribution. Insight will be provided into services used to generate properly formatted graphics for output and accessing system linear buffers.

While not a complete engineering reference, it is hoped that this paper will provide the starting point for future development of algorithms using CODE for the WSR-88D.
