Access to ECMWF archive and information

Horst Böttger, ECMWF, Reading, Berks., United Kingdom; and D. Marbouty, K. Fielding, and B. Raoult

ECMWF runs an operational analysis and forecasting system including a high resolution deterministic forecast and the ensemble forecasts with 50 members out to day 10 and seasonal forecasts also using the ensemble approach out to six months. All model results are stored in the Centre's archives.

In recent years the Centre has developed a web-based information system providing real-time forecasts from these prediction systems in graphical form. During the start-up phase of seasonal forecasting only the tropical belt products were shown on the web, while recently it was agreed to widen the access to global products for all NMHSs of the WMO.

The Centre's archives contain all model results from over twenty years of operational atmospheric analysis and forecasting, including ocean wave data. The 15 year re-analysis data set for the years 1979 to 1993 will soon be complemented with the data from the new re-analysis project for the years 1957 to 2001. The data are available for scientific research and education at handling cost only and also for commercial activities. The interface to the data archive is a web-based browser which provides an interactive facility to inspect the content of the archive, order the data and obtain a quote of the charges. Direct downloading of small data sets will become a future feature of the system.
