Advances in climate data collection, processing and distribution

Michael Crowe, NOAA/NESDIS/NCDC, Asheville, NC; and T. R. Karl

Key data issues for the financial weather risk community include timely collection, processing and access. NCDC has begun collecting data through the National Weather Service (NWS) AWIPS dissemination system which will make this process faster and more efficient. In addition, NCDC is working with the NWS to develop a system to electronically transfer information about changes to observing sites. This Web-based capability will greatly enhance the end user's knowledge of such things as changes in location of weather stations and siting of instrumentation. Such non-climatic events can have substantial influence on the data collected. The NCDC is also beginning to deploy a Climate Reference Network of 250 stations in the United States which will enhance our climate monitoring capabilities for the 21st Century and beyond. Each station will be provided with state of the art instrumentation, which has been carefully calibrated. Advances in data processing include developing the capability to detect subtle inhomogeneities in the data stream received from surface observing sites. Finally, NCDC is striving to serially complete the surface observation data set and put all of its data and metadata on-line to allow for easier user access.
