A GIS-Based Automated Weather Event Notification System for the Railroad Industry

PAPER WITHDRAWN

Douglas P. Chenevert, DTN Weather Services, Burnsville, MN; and G. Liknes, J. Lystad, C. Reece, and K. Crowe

The ability to re-route and/or delay the transportation of people and property based on timely knowledge of weather events is a significant issue for many in the transportation industry. Accurate information regarding the areal and temporal extent of specific weather phenomena can greatly aid in protecting both persons and property, as well as enhance the cost-effectiveness of a business.

An overview of a fully operational, GIS-based weather alert system for the railroad industry will be presented. The integration of proprietary system components with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) GIS software will be demonstrated.

Other topics to be covered include industry-specific threshold weather events, in situ measurements, messaging architecture, and reusability of system components.
