EMWIN System Description and Future Plans

Emergency Managers Weather Information System (EMWIN) is a live serial bitstream developed in Silver Spring, Maryland by the NWS . This bitstream is warning and watch prioritized, however it contains over 10,000 meteorological products. The bitstream is uplinked by NESDIS at CDA Wallops, Virginia to GOES-8 and GOES-10. The bitstream is then simultaneously broadcast by both satellites via on board transponders. In addition, the live bitstream is also broadcast onto the internet. The EMWIN signal covers over half of the world via satellite footprint and the entire world via the internet push technology. Currently, there are three proprietary software packages available from vendors that will decode and display the bitstream, set alarms for severe weather down to county level, and provide paging for emergency managers.

Future plans are to increase the baud rate of the satellite signal, increase the number of products and phase into more graphical products. We will also increase the foot print in the Pacific rim area by addition of a Peace Sat uplink. The NWS strategic plan includes EMWIN expansion into the international arena in the near future.
