The Alphanumeric Backup Replacement System (ANBURS) was developed by the National Weather Service (NWS) to provide backup for the Automation of Field Operations and Services (AFOS) communication network and the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Weather Messages Switching Center Replacement (WMSCR) system when the National Weather Service Telecommunication Gateway (NWSTG) is nonoperational. ANBURS has been providing reliable backup operations since February 1997. Recently ANBURS was upgraded with more powerful computer systems and related peripherals to allow for the addition of products from and to the AWIPS network. This paper describes the latest ANBURS system architecture, operations, and results from the Operational Test and Evaluation (OT&E) conducted in May, 2000.
