P1.7 Weather Effects Predictions for Military Mission Planning

Tuesday, 16 January 2001
Christopher Plonka, TASC, Reading, MA

In order to incorporate automated weather impacts into military Air Battle Planning, it is necessary to calculate the effect of weather on the performance of electro-optical (EO) weapon and navigation systems. The Joint Environment Exploitation Segment (JEES) incorporates high-resolution regional numerical weather prediction model output with EO (infra-red, laser, TV, and NVG) first principles environmental impact models to effectively integrate weather into force level planning. JEES is not a weather forecast program—it is a program to translate conventional weather forecast information into performance predictions and integrate the critical parameters that impact precision engagement. These decision-support tools highlight the problems to avoid and the opportunities to exploit. It anticipates user-needs and pre-processes impact determinants as much as possible. This presentation will show how JEES links military meteorological and oceanographic data to decision-making for force level planning.
