A new M.S. in Professional Meteorology degree program at the University of Oklahoma

The School of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma has created a new M.S. in Professional Meteorology (MSPM) degree program. This degree was created to respond to the growing demand for meteorologists by the private sector and is designed specifically to prepare students for employment both in commercial meteorology companies and in other industries that can benefit from meteorological expertise. The program creates a partnership between a private sector sponsor and one or more students, with the sponsor playing a major role in designing a student's curriculum and research project. Important features of the degree program include a secondary area of study, oral and written communication requirements, and a research topic tailored to benefit the sponsor's business. This talk will provide additional details on the admission and degree requirements. In addition, we will summarize our experiences to date in getting the program started and in recruiting both sponsors and students to participate. We will also describe an unexpected and significant benefit resulting from our interactions with one of our MSPM program sponsors.
