The start up of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's degree in Applied Meteorology (Fall, 2000) has resulted in a number of outreach and educational initiatives. Faculty have developed a "weather boot camp" for local teens, conducted community workshops in lightning safety and hurricane preparedness, and designed an operational weather center that will meet the needs of the community and University well into the 21st century. Additionally, a survey course in meteorology was transformed from a traditional lecture format into three different cyberspace presentations: web-facilitated, web-enhanced, and web-based. This paper describes the administrative and academic structures that supported these activities: their successes and failures. A model is proposed to motivate teachers to use web technology in the classroom and in community outreach.
