Adaptive observations at NCEP: Past, present, and future

This presentation will offer an overview of adaptive observational work carried out during the past six years at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), in collaboration with scientists at PSU, MIT, NRL, and NOAA/ETL. A summary of results from the past field experiments of FASTEX, NORPEX and CALJET will be followed by those from the more recent Winter Storm Reconnaissance (WSR) 1999 and 2000 programs. The operational implementation of the WSR program in 2001 will be discussed next, along with the latest results, including those from PACJET. Potential improvements to, and an expansion of the operational system for mesoscale targeting will also be discussed. The presentation will end with an outlook into the future, discussing THORPEX related research plans to explore the possibility of expanding the concept of adaptive observations onto longer time and larger spatial scales, using a combination of in situ and satellite observations.
