An ASOS camera for cloud base winds

Charles L. Bristor, Certified Consulting Meteorologist, Falls Church, VA

Following an earlier paper, the suggestion is further developed by which the addition of a camera to the ASOS sensor suite could provide valuable cloud tracer wind data beyond that available from satellites. An algorithm demonstrates the extraction of winds at the top of the boundary layer by tracking low cloud bases in baroclinic regions where multi layer clouds preclude access from above. Such winds, available on an hourly basis, offer a unique addition to the data base for boundary layer prediction.
