Utilization of LDM at the Storm Prediction Center
Gregory H. Grosshans, NOAA/NWS/NCEP/SPC, Norman, OK
UNIDATA's Local Data Manager (LDM) software is used at the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Storm Prediction Center (SPC) to support operational data flows. This paper describes the use of LDM in three areas. First it is shown how the SPC uses LDM to facilitate official product dissemination into the NWS AWIPS system with the Product Dissemination System (PDS). The PDS is a combination of LDM, an in house client-server application and several AWIPS Message Handling System (MHS) applications. Second, it is shown how LDM ingests NOAAPORT data. SPC and the NCEP Aviation Weather Center (AWC) together have modified FSL code to insert NOAAPORT data into LDM so it appears like a Family Of Service data stream. This application is now used at a few other NOAA offices. And third it is shown how LDM provides redundancy of national mosaic radar data between the SPC and the AWC. When one site experiences heavy rainfall the satellite signal will fade resulting in the loss of imagery at a site. However, due to the redundancy setup, that site can continue to receive data via LDM from the other National Center.
