A regional comparison of GPS atmospheric moisture measurements at Plymouth and Bartlett, New Hampshire

Derek W. Brown, Plymouth State College, Plymouth, NH; and S. J. Clarke and J. Zabransky

Plymouth State College (PSC) is a participant in the new SuomiNet consortium of college and university sites that continuously records, downloads and shares GPS, atmospheric, moisture measurements. The NOAA Forecast Systems Laboratory (FSL) already has a growing network of GPS monitoring sites, several of which are in the Northeast. Given its regional size and the number of expected GPS observing sites in total, the Northeast will be one of the most densely covered areas in the country for atmospheric moisture. An initial comparison of integrated precipitable water (IPW) is made between the FSL site at Bartlett, NH (BARN), located 56km northeast of Plymouth, and the PSC SuomiNet site. In particular, IPW data trends, averages and standard deviations are examined. A study of the translation of a back-door cold front through the Northeast, from the standpoint of IPW observations at the two sites, is also considered.
