Climate variations and its impact on trend detection

Julian X. L. Wang, NOAA/ARL, Silver Spring, MD; and K. C. Mo

A reliable estimate of trend is the key to climate change detection. Adapting the Hilbert-Huang transformation, a method developped at NASA, we have analyzed sever key atmospheric and oceanic index time series. a trend estimate from conventional linear statistics and current method are compared. An attempt is made to access impact of various climate variations, such as ENSO and decadal oscillation, on the trend detection.
