Evaluation of windshields for use in the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS)

Jennifer Dover, SAIC, Sterling, VA; and L. J. Winans

The National Weather Service (NWS) is currently evaluating All Weather Precipitation Accumulation Gauges (AWPAG) for use in the Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS). The motivation for these gauges is to accurately measure precipitation accumulation in winter. An important consideration in this regard is shielding gauges to reduce catch losses that are known to occur with wind driven snow. An experiment was conducted to compare the differences in catch when different types of commercially available windshields were used to protect the standard NWS nonrecording rain gauge (the eight inch bucket). This paper will report on the results of that experiment.
