Utilizing the Weather Forecast Office Hydrologic Forecast System for Coastal Flood Operations

David R. Vallee, NOAA/NWSFO, Taunton, MA; and J. Notchey

The Weather Forecast Office (WFO) Hydrologic Forecast System (WHFS) provides an integrated suite of hydrologic software which allows the operational staff to more efficiently monitor current hydrologic conditions, as well as prepare daily river summaries, watches and warnings. With the newly acquired suite of National Ocean Service (NOS) tide gage observations and astronomical forecasts, as well as a locally developed method for incorporating the Aviation Model (AVN) extra-tropical storm surge guidance, WHFS can be configured to assist coastal WFOs during coastal flood episodes. This paper will discuss the configuration and uses of WHFS with regard to coastal flood operations.
