Development and implementation of the NWS warning environment simulator version 1.0
Michael A. Magsig, CIMMS/Univ. of Oklahoma, Norman, OK; and E. M. Page
Simulating warning operations has been an effective training tool at the Warning Decision Training Branch (WDTB) dating back to the middle 1990s when WSR-88D (Weather Service Radar 1988 Doppler) training occurred in Norman, Oklahoma. In the AWIPS era, simulating warning operations continues to be an integral part of training at the WDTB Warning Decision Making Workshops and Distance Learning Operations Course Workshops held at the Cooperative Program for Operational Meteorology, Education and Training (COMET) in Boulder, CO. With strong support from the Field Requirements Group and National Weather Service Headquarters, a decision was made to combine WDTB’s Warning Environment Simulator with the Linux version of AWIPS and local archiving capabilities. Starting in the summer of 2001, meteorologists at NWS forecast offices will be able to simulate warning operations locally on a high-end stand-alone Linux PC that has been procured for training. This paper will discuss the history of the simulator development, describe its functionality, and provide an update on implementation and future releases.
