Application of the PSU-NCAR MM5 to Forecast Operations over the Texas Coastal Bend

Waylon G. Collins, NOAA/NWS, Corpus Christi, TX

The PSU/NCAR MM5, a non-hydrostatic mesoscale numerical model, has recently been used to support forecast operations at the National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Corpus Christi, Texas. The purpose is to improve the forecasting of phenomena occurring within the meso time and space scales. The model output has been made available on the local AWIPS D2D. The model has shown some skill in forecasting convection over the Texas Coastal Bend. Nevertheless, future changes to the model configuration are planned, to access subsequent improvements in the forecasting of mesoscale phenomena. The most significant change will be the use of dynamical initialization, wherein Four Dimensional Data Assimilation (FDDA) will be applied to higher resolution analyses.
