Evolution of NANOOK, the NOAA/NESDIS Near-real-time MODIS processing system

The NANOOK Near Real Time MODIS processing system was conceived as a proof of concept program, and implemented under the Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) Central Satellite Data Processing (CSDP) contract. It was designed to provide NOAA and the National Weather Service with rapid access to weather data from the TERRA satellite, and to provide risk reduction for future high data rate satellite systems by discovering the risks and problems associated with high data volumes and Near Real Time operations.

This paper and presentation will discuss the changes to NANOOK over the last year as NOAA has adapted to the addition of a second satellite(AQUA), additional request for products, time delays in ancillary product delivery, the expansion of the system to include additional processing hardware, and the added complexity resulting from the close partnership with the AIRS processing team which shares processing hardware and requires some MODIS products for their Near Real Time processing.
