The October 3-4 2000 Heavy Precipitation/Flash Flood Event Across South Florida

Pablo Santos, NOAA/NWS, Miami, FL; and G. Rader, Z. Brown, and D. P. Brown

A significant heavy tropical rain event occurred over southeast Florida on October 3 and 4, 2000 that caused extensive flooding to homes and businesses. This flooding was produced by a developing tropical system that moved north through the area. Rainfall totals were over 15 inches in less than 12 hours in some areas. This paper presents an analysis of the antecedents of such event along with comparisons between actual rain gauge data and WSR-88D and TRMM rainfall estimates. In addition, an analysis of the results of a technique to forecast short-term rain rates from TRMM satellite data will be presented.
