NCAR Integrated Sounding System Observations for VTMX

The Department of Energy VTMX (Vertical Transport and Mixing) Program sponsored a month long campaign in the Salt Lake Valley during October of 2000. The campaign intensively studied stable layers, weak or intermittent turbulence and morning/evening transitions around an urban basin. The aim is to advance understanding of vertical transport and mixing processes and the development measurement techniques. NCAR operated an Integrated Sounding System (ISS) in the southern Salt Lake valley which included an advanced wind profiler (MAPR - Multiple Antenna Profiler Radar), a backscatter lidar, a sodar, a tethered blimp, radiosondes, and surface instruments. The systems made interesting measurements, observing for example the development and breakdown of stable layers and their perturbation by gravity waves and lake effect breezes. Data from the systems are also being integrated into a mesoscale model.
