Technologies used for customized dynamic web access to a unique collection of Arctic change time series

Willa H. Zhu, JISAO/Univ. of Washington, Seattle, WA; and J. E. Overland

The Unaami Data collection was assembled to help scientists and researchers to study and understand the recent atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial changes in the Arctic. This paper describes the technologies implemented in creating the Unaami data collection web access system and back-end time series data management.

The Unaami data collection web access system provides easy access to a unique collection of time series data that are representative of changes in the Arctic since 1970. The data are collected from different sources and are converted into netCDF format using the standard EPIC netCDF conventions for in-situ data. EPIC/MySQL database is used to manage the metadata. The Unaami data collection web access system is a web interactive user interface that gives easy on-line access to Unaami data. This system implements Java Applets and JavaScript to provide highly user interactive front-end data selection features and uses CGI Perl scripts, existing EPIC system utilities and the PPLUS graphic package to perform back-end data retrieving, data plotting, and data listing. The JavaScript and CGI Perl scripts are also used to generate dynamic HTML pages. The features of the system include making time series and time series stacked plots, viewing data information (metadata), displaying data, and downloading data. User can also refine data selection and choose parameter sorting for the results. The Unaami data collection is freely available to the scientific research community.
