Near Term Planned Mission Enhancements for the WSR-88D Open Radar Product Generator

The deployment of the Open System Radar Product Generator (ORPG) improvement to the WSR-88D is underway with Open Build 1.0. The National Weather Service is moving aggressively to take advantage of the ORPG computing power to implement applications to improve the operational utility of the radar data. This paper will discuss functional enhancements planned for Open Build 1.1, to be deployed in March 2002, and for Open Build 2.0, to follow in late calendar year 2002. A look at somewhat longer term enhancement plans will also be presented.
