Wind speed and direction analyses for a group of southeast surface stations

Nearly 50 years of wind speed and direction data were obtained from a group of twelve southeast National Weather Service surface observation stations to determine the existence and nature of periodicities and spatial correlations among the data. The stations include Augusta, Athens, Atlanta, Macon, and Savannah, Georgia; Beaufort, Columbia, and Charleston, South Carolina; Asheville, Charlotte, and Raleigh, North Carolina; and Jacksonville, Florida. Periodicities in the wind speed and direction ranging from several days to several years are examined. Correlations and spectra among regionally similar stations and with current large-scale indices such as ENSO are noted and discussed.
