A Life in the Global Atmosphere: Dick Reed and the World of International Science

By its very nature, meteorology is the most inherently international of the earth sciences. Moreover, like others of his "greatest generation," Dick Reed's career was shaped by global events -- the Great Depression, the second World War, and the development of global-scale technologies. These led him into international scientific collaborations, to leadership in the crucial initial development of the Global Atmospheric Research Program, and to pioneering initiative in opening scientific contacts between China and the Western World. These contributions laid the groundwork for the international collaborative framework of science that we enjoy today.
