Can a Meteorologist Beat the Weather Market?

Lee E. Branscome, Environmental Dynamics Research, Inc., Palm Beach Gardens, FL

Weather derivatives have generated new career opportunities for meteorologists. But, the weather market is not accessible or suitable for most meteorologists. The avenues of participation in the market are limited. Furthermore, success in the weather market demands a certain type and amount of expertise. A weather-market meteorologist also needs certain tools to play the game. The relative importance of using clean historical data versus forecast information as pricing tools in the weather market are reviewed.
