Using Real-Time and Forecast Air Quality Data to Inform the Public

Richard A. Wayland, EPA, Research Triangle Park, NC

This presentation will provide an overview of the EPA’s Real-Time and Forecast Air Quality Program known as AIRNOW. The AIRNOW program utilizes current monitoring technologies combined with innovative data transfer approaches to provide public access to near real-time information on ozone and particulate matter air quality levels for 39 States, the District of Columbia, and 5 Canadian Provinces. In addition, this program provides next-day forecasts for 160 cities across the United States. These data are provided via the Internet (www.epa.gov/airnow) ,via national Weather Service Providers, and national media such as The Weather Channel and USA Today. This presentation will summarize the process for the presentation of complex environmental information in a manner easily used and understood by the general public.
