The impact of wildfires on Central Florida's tourism industry

Danielle Courtenay, Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Orlando, FL

Tourism is Central Florida's number one industry bringing 43.3 million visitors to the area in 2000 and pumping an estimated $20.9 billion into the economy. Any natural disaster, including wildfires and the poor air quality they cause, can affect residents and visitors alike. Accurate information and ongoing communication is critical to ensuring that any negative impact to Central Florida's number one economic engine is minimal.
