AWIPS–A Look to the Future
John L. Hayes, NOAA/NWS, Silver Spring, MD
AWIPS has been deployed, is operational, and has been a demonstrated success. The NWS challenge is to keep this system and architecture as close to the cutting edge as possible–and to exploit its vast potential for rapid science and technology insertion. This paper will provide an overview of NWS plans for the near future for strengthening the AWIPS architecture and performance, and for future S&T insertion. It will also lay out concepts being considered for the longer term evolution of the system and architecture.
