Creating VisAD applications in the geosciences using Python (Formerly Paper Number 3.6)

The VisAD library is an important resource for software developers in the geophysical sciences. It provides a completely generalized data model that can be used to represent any of our data, as well as techniques to help analyze these data. Being a developer's library, however, means that it was not targetted toward 'end-users' -- which in our community means students and scientists. Fortunately, however, the easy-to-use scripting language, Python, has been ported to Java (where it has been named Jython) and the marriage between Jython and VisAD is excellent. Thus simple expressions, such as
diff=(image2 - image3) / modeltemp
can be used to perform otherwise very complex combinations of disparate data. This presentation will walk through several simple examples designed to show just how easy Python makes using VisAD.
