NOAA's Teacher at Sea Program

Dana Lee Tomlinson, Emory Elementary School, Chula Vista, CA

During my stay aboard the Ka'imimoana from March 1 through March 23, 2002 as NOAA's Teacher at Sea, I tried to learn as much about what everyone did as possible - scientists and crew. I participated in CTD's, released weather balloons, observed the recovery and deployment of buoys, rode in the RHIB during a buoy repair, was the host of 7 live broadcasts to schools throughout the country and possibly beyond, answered over 700 emails from people all over the world, and interviewed most people on board on videotape to be turned into streaming videos upon our return. I was treated like any other crewmember, and I am very grateful to have had the experience. I believe it has brought the important scientific research NOAA does to more people than NOAA has ever had a Teacher at Sea reach in the past, and it will only serve to make me a better teacher for having had the experience. It was a win-win situation for everyone involved.
