Building and Growing NASA’s JOINed Digital Library for Science Education (JDL)

Shelley Olds, NASA/SSAI, Greenbelt, MD; and B. W. Meeson

In this presentation, you will learn about how NASA’s JOINed Digital Library for Science Education (JDL) provides the educational community access to individual distributed collections of NASA produced Earth science, Space science, and Astrobiology educational products through a single, web-based interface. JDL serves the informal, formal, and professional education communities including resource developers, educators, exhibit creators, students, science interpreters, applied workforce learners, and many others. JDL offers reviewed education resources approved by NASA Earth Science Enterprise and NASA Office of Space Science and in the future, resources approved by the Digital Library for Earth System Education (DLESE) and other approval entities. The fully operational library has a customizable interface, a service to allow users to provide feedback on individual resources, a bookmarking service to allow users store their searches and links to their favorite resources, and tools to easily build, connect and administer collections.

You will see a diversity of samples from JDL’s four educational collections which are currently connected and searchable, Edmall, Space Science Resource Directory, Earthgazer, and DLESE. The Edmall, produced by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Education Office, is a juried collection of defined educational resources that support the teaching of Earth system science concepts. The Space Science Education Resource Directory provides educators an entry point into the wealth of educational materials funded by NASA's Office of Space Science Education and Public Outreach Program. Earthgazer is a collection of visual and audio resources and was designed primarily for the educational product developer community. And DLESE is a library providing access to digital resources for learning about the Earth system, and an open, organized community of users. More collections are being connected as time goes on.

You will also get an understanding of how JDL and DLESE are collaborating to develop compatible libraries so that future DLESE services will be available to JDL users and the JDL and its collections will be available through the DLESE discovery system.
