GIS As A Briefing And Planning Tool In The NWS

NWS has been using GIS for planning and briefing for about 2 years. ArcView 3.2 is used as a "data engine" to ingest text based weather data and outputs these data in GIS format (shapefiles). This technique is used in creating the hourly graphic on the Hydrographic Information Center (HIC) homepage and to create graphics of hurricanes and typhoons in the Atlantic and Pacific. In addition, Internet Map Service (IMS) technology is being experimented with to allow users to interact with the data. The IMS technology is being used to brief senior NWS manangement, NOAA and DOC officials on hurricane forecasts. The techology is also being used to give emergency managers easy access to information about river conditions from actual river gage data and other NWS river products for planning purposes This paper will describe the data ingest process, the conventional web products being produced, and the IMS applications.
