Validation of a microwave-based tropical rainfall potential (TRaP) for landfalling tropical cyclones

Results from a validation of the experimental 24-hour Tropical Rainfall Potential (TRaP) during the 2001 and 2002 Atlantic hurricane seasons will be presented. The TRaP technique incorporates rain rates from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Advanced Microwave Sounder Unit-B (NOAA 15 and 16 AMSU-B) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) along with track forecasts of tropical cyclones to produce an estimate of the 6- and 24-hour rainfall totals. Efforts currently underway at NOAA/NESDIS to automate the technique will also be discussed.
