AIRS Data and Data Support at NASA GES DISC DAAC

The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) is a high-resolution infrared sounder closely coupled with AMSU-A (Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A) and HSB (Humidity Sounder for Brazil) on EOS Aqua spacecraft launched in May, 2002. The data products from AIRS/AMSU-A/HSB are archived and distributed at the Goddard Distributed Active Archive Center (GDAAC) located in the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DAAC).

Data products consist of radiances, geo-locations, and atmospheric products including temperature, humidity, cloud, and ozone. AIRS instrument provides measurements for atmospheric temperature profiles to an accuracy of 1 K in every 1 km layer (1 K for every 4 km layer in the stratosphere) and humidity profiles to an accuracy of 20 % in every 2 km layer in the troposphere.

The Atmospheric Dynamics Data Support Team (ADDST) at the GES DISC/DAAC is providing various services to assist users in understanding, accessing, and using AIRS data product. The ADDST has been developing tools to read, visualize, analyze and reformat the AIRS data including AIRS QuickLook to display images from Level1B products and the web-based AIRS on-the-fly/on-demand sub-setter. Other data support services provided by the ADDST contain assistance with data mining, access of various technical documents, helpdesk for user questions and request, and educational resources.

The data will be available via GES DISC DAAC Search and Order (http://daac.gsfc.nasa.gov/data), the EOS Data Gateway (EDG) (http://eos.nasa.gov/imswelcome/) and an FTP containing sub-setted and reformatted data products.
