New Scanning Strategies for the WSR-88D

The WSR-88D has used the same scanning strategies, or volume coverage patterns (VCPs), since being implemented in the early 1990s. The design and testing of new VCPs has been underway since 1998. Subsequent evaluations are expected to result in a recommendation to implement one or more new VCPs for field operations. This paper provides the details of the candidate VCPs, the potential impact on WSR-88D operations, and the time frame new VCPs are likely to become available to operational National Weather Service staff.
