The NOAA Operational Model Archive and Distribution System

The NOAA Operational Model Archive and Distribution System (NOMADS) Internet model access and archive project is developing national and international momentum across the climate, weather and oceanographic communities. This paper provides a primer on how to use the systems and data under the NOMADS framework, the current data availability (climate, weather, and ocean), and provides a status report for this highly collaborative project. More than 20 scientists have used the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) NOMODS server to access climate model output. In addition, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Data Distribution Center obtains model data from the GFDL NOMADS server. The Impacts community in preparation for the next IPCC report is now using these data. Several international programs have recently agreed to participate under the NOMADS framework. NOMADS has been selected as one of five science and monitoring activities in the "Climate Action Partnership" (CAP) between the Australia and the US (Dept. of State, Dept. of Energy, Dept. of Commerce and Environmental Protection Agency), including collaboration with the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) and the Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiments (GODAE). NOMADS has also been selected as a test bed under the Committee of Earth Observing Satellite (CEOS) for the development applications on "Grid" high bandwidth technologies. European partners under the NOMADS umbrella include the United Kingdom's Natural Environmental Research Council (NERC) which has an "e-science" project: "The NERC DataGrid". These efforts position NOMADS to demonstrate the viability of its philosophy of distributed data access for high bandwidth, high volume data access (e.g., satellite and radar data).
