On-Orbit calibration of AMSR-E and the retrieval of ocean products

Frank J. Wentz, Remote Sensing Systems, Santa Rosa, CA; and C. Gentemann and P. Ashcroft

The Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) was launched on May 4, 2002, aboard NASA's Aqua Spacecraft. AMSE-E will provide information on a wide variety of geophysical parameters, including a suite of 5 over-ocean products: sea-surface temperature and wind speed, columnar water vapor and cloud water, and rain rate. Accurate retrievals will require precision on-orbit calibration of the AMSR-E radiometers. We will present the results of the preliminary AMSR-E on-orbit calibration as well as the initial calibration and validation of the ocean products using a variety of in situ and satellite measurements.
