Results from the MODIS cloud detection algorithm (MOD35) will be compared to lidar and radar data obtained from the ARM (Atmospheric Radiation Measurement) SGP CART (Southern Great Plains Cloud and Radiation Testbed) site in Oklahoma. Cloud data has been temporally and spatially collocated from various times over a 1.5 year period. Global cloud frequency results will be compared to those from ISCCP (International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project) and CLAVR (Clouds from AVHRR).

Comparisons of MODIS cloud products (MOD06 cloud top pressure, effective cloud emissivity, cloud water phase) with corresponding data from other sensors and algorithms will also be detailed. Global data is available from ISCCP and HIRS processing performed at UW-Madison as well as extensive regional statistics from GOES data. Diurnal and even hourly changes in cloud properties will also be available from the two MODIS instuments on board the sun synchronous Terra and Aqua platforms. Each observe Earth twice per day and approximately three hours apart.
