National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Low rate information transmission (LRIT) product projections
Frank Eng, Computer Sciences Corp., Suitland, MD; and R. Luczak and C. A. Vance
The NOAA GOES system will begin its new LRIT broadcasts in early 2003. As the successor to WEFAX, the general content of this digital LRIT broadcast will include most of the current WEFAX product set. It will also include, however, additional products that expand or improve upon the current WEFAX product set as well as "supplement" the current WEFAX products. These additional "supplementary" products are planned to include NWS (National Weather Service) products and DCS (Data Collection System) products. This paper addresses both the initial product set (i.e., Initial Operational Capability) and potentially new products that are planned to be broadcast by NOAA's LRIT system. It also discusses the sources and characteristics of both initial and supplementary software for generating and managing these products at the user receive stations.
