Evaluation and Improvement of Bulk Aerodynamic Algorithms at High Wind Speeds

Brenda L. Mulac, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO; and J. A. Curry

A comparison of three bulk aerodynamic algorithms (Clayson, et al., Coare2.6, and Zeng, et al.) was performed using several high wind speed (>15m/s) datasets from SEAFLUX. These datasets include FASTEX, CATCH, and Framzy99. The Coare2.6 algorithm proved to be the least problematic and was chosen for further development. Different bulk-to-skin temperature and sea spray models were added to the bulk algorithm and compared to the high wind insitu fluxes. The results of the comparison are presented and discussed.
