Improved NWS Climate Products and Services in Response to Customer Feedback

Barbara E. Mayes, NOAA/NWS, Silver Spring, MD; and R. J. Leffler, R. E. Livezey, and D. Lecomte

The National Weather Service's Climate Services Division, under the Office of Climate, Water, and Weather Services, has hosted several workshops in the last two years to gather feedback from customers of climate products. The workshops have targeted customers of the Drought Outlook, the 30-day and 90-day Outlooks, the Excessive Heat Outlook, and the Cooperative Observers Program (COOP). In response to the feedback from these workshops, changes have been made to several forecast products issued by the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) and their partners.

Due to the ongoing and widespread drought conditions across the U.S. in 2002, interest has been heightened in monitoring and forecasting drought conditions. In response to the suggestions made by customers at the workshops, changes either have already been made or are ongoing to the Drought Outlook. The importance of a quality data base has also been addressed through suggestions from our customers, especially with regard to data continuity. The Climate Services Division continues to strive to improve customer service by soliciting and validating our customer's recommendations and then incorporating their suggestions into climate products, services, and data.
