The University of Northern Iowa takes weather education by STORM
The Science center for Teaching, Outreach and Research on Meteorology (STORM Project is a cooperative project between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administation and the University of Iowa. The curriculum development initiative of STORM focuses on teaching the concepts of meteorlogy by incorporating real-time weather information into kindergarten through ninth grade classrooms.
Team leader Professor Tim Cooney convened his first meeting with STORM teachers at the Annual Meeting in Albuguerque, New Mexico. The initial groundwork was set for the curriculum objectives along with the materials and web page design. Professor Cooney reconvened his group during the summers of 2001 and 2002 at the UNI STORM site. Curriculum materials were researched, written and revised for public use. Formats were selected according to grade level and alignment with the National Science Standards. Materials were piloted in classrooms nationwide in the spring of 2002.
